Get-together in Thana

By Sherene Vakil · August 7, 2015
An informative talk on making a will under The Indian Succession Act, 1925 was given by Manek Kalyaniwala, solicitor and counsel of the Bombay High Court and a qualified solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. The senior most associate at Mulla and Mulla and Craigie Blunt and Caroe was speaking at a function organized by The Thana Parsi Zoroastrian Anjuman (TPZA) at Hotel Maria Plaza on June 6, 2015, informs Percy Karani, honorary secretary of TPZA in an email sent to Parsiana.
(Top row, l-r): Percy Karani, Pervez Bhesania, Manek Kalyaniwala,
Zarsis Udhnawala, Bomi Boyce, Dara Wadia, Firdosh Kotwal and Rumi Kasad;
(2nd row): youngsters after talk; member of audience asking a question

It is necessary to enlighten Zoroastrians regarding how and why one should make a will and about the repercussions of not doing so. Kalyaniwala went into the minute details of how many types of wills there are within the purview of the law, applicable as per differing situations; who are considered beneficiaries; and the difference between beneficiaries and nominees. Many attendees interacted with the lawyer who strove to address their concerns.
Karani mentions that following closely on the heels of the pilgrimage to the eight atash behrams in India organized by TPZA, a Dae mah jashan was held at the Cawasji Patell Agiary on the morning of June 6 which was attended by many Zoroastrians residing in and around Thana. The ceremony was led by the head priest of the Patell Agiary, Ervad Behramsha Sidhwa, who also conducted the humbandagi in which all present participated.
Later in the day the action shifted to Hotel Maria Plaza for the annual get-together. TPZA president Zarsis Udhnawala welcomed the members and guests, followed by two minutes’ silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls. Karani felicitated guest speaker Kalyaniwala; his parents who had accompanied him were honored by vice president Pervez Bhesania. Joint treasurer Rumi Kasad introduced the guest speaker.
The function ended with a vote of thanks by trustee Kersasp Patva, followed by the singing of Chhaiyé Hamé Zarthoshti. A subsidized dinner catered by the hotel management in coordination with TPZA’s joint secretary Bomi Boyce brought the evening to a close, the email concludes.
