Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of March. Intimation of only five births was received by Parsiana from one south Bombay hospital that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 36.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 50 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 31 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 55 years, averaging at 34 years.
Heart related diseases were the major causes of death for seven patients. Four were in the over 80 age group. While cancer felled five victims, four each fell prey to septicemia, kidney failure and lung disease/pneumonia. Three Zoroastrians succumbed to old age/general debility and two to liver disease. Isolated causes of deaths were due to fever, asthma, intestinal obstruction, toxaemia (a generalized poisoning of the body by the products of bacteria or damaged tissue) and brain disease. An elderly male was murdered. The viscera was preserved for chemical analysis in the case of one death. The youngest to perish was a 54-year-old male, the eldest, a 98-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for March 1-15 in Bombay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
