An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (six) and death (40) figures between January 1-15, 2015.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 26 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 37 years, averaging at 31 years.
Of the 14 patients who suffered due to different ailments of the heart, the majority — 11 — were over the 80-year-old milestone. Eight deaths were attributed to pneumonia/lung disease. Cancer claimed the lives of five Zoroastrians. While three persons were victims of diabetes, two each fell prey to septicemia and brain disease. Epilepsy, kidney failure, hyperthyroidism (a condition due to excessive production of the thyroid gland hormone), atherosclerosis (deposition of fatty substances in the arteries), obesity, multi organ failure and astrocytoma (a slow growing tumor of the supporting tissue of the brain and spinal cord) were the causes of death of one patient each. The community lost a two-month-old baby girl (the youngest to breathe her last). Ninety-six was the eldest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of January 2015 in Bombay, was 78 years. The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
