Twenty-nine community members opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence while only five births were reported.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 45 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 57 years, averaging at 37 years.
Two of the six patients who succumbed to diseases of the heart had crossed the 80 year mark. Pneumonia/lung disease and cancer felled four victims each while three perished due to septicemia. Hypertension and brain disease felled two Zoroastrians each. Kidney failure, haemoptysis (the coughing up of blood), haematoma (a swelling filled with blood), septic shock, liver disease, diabetes, haemorrhage and shock due to rupture of the spleen and old age/general debility took single lives. The youngest to perish was a 15-year-old lad; the eldest a man aged 105! A centenarian (female) was also lost to the community. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 13 days of February in Bombay, was 81 years. The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
