Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the latter half of June 2014.
Births cut a sorry figure for the last fornight of June. Intimation of only four births was received by Parsiana from one south Bombay hospital that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 23.
All five of the heart disease victims were over the 80 year milestone. The other causes of deaths were: cancer (four), septicemia and lung disease/pneumonia (three each), brain disease and multi organ failure (two each) and peptic ulcer, kidney failure, cholangitis (inflammation of the bile ducts) and anemia (one each). Fifty-two was the youngest age at death; the eldest, 94. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of June in Bom­bay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
