No Zoroastrian nuptials took place during the 15 day period.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
The OCH registers revealed five interfaith marriages whereas at Khar the count was three. There were no civil marriages contracted between Zoroastrians during this period.
At the Chandanwadi crematorium eight Zoroastrian bodies were cremated during the three-month period.
Thirty-three Zoroastrians opted to be interred at the Bombay Towers of Silence while only six births were reported. Various diseases of the heart were the major cause of death in 13 cases. Of those, eight persons were over the 80 year milestone. Cancer was next, claiming six lives, whereas pneumonia/lung disease felled five. Three Zoroastrians were victims of old age/general debility. One patient each died due to fracture and dislocation of the humerus (the bone of the upper arm, between the elbow and the shoulder joint), liver disease, urinary tract infection, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and obesity. In a community known for its longevity, there were two Zoroastrians who had crossed their centenary before passing away — a female at 101 years and a male at 107! The youngest to succumb was a 54-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of August in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
