Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the latter half of July 2014 are carried in this issue.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 26 and 34 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 32 and 39 years, averaging at 36 years.
Data on only one birth in Bombay (from the one south Bombay hospital) for the 15 day period was received by Parsiana while 31 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet). Pneumomia/lung disease beat heart disease to be the major killer for the 15 day period. Eight Zoroastrians died due to the disease whereas diseases of the heart claimed five (of which only one was over the age of 80). The other killers were: diabetes, multi organ failure and cancer (three each), old age/general debility and kidney failure (two each) and brain disease, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis of one half of face or body), septicemia, Parkinson’s disease and hypertension (one patient each). The eldest to breathe his last was a man well past his centenary — at 103 years! The youngest to perish was a 54-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of July in Bom­bay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
