Milestones
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 44 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 44 years, averaging at 31 years.
Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of the new year. Intimation of only three births was received by Parsiana from one hospital in south Bombay that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 29.
The biggest killer as usual was complications of the heart taking seven lives. While cancer claimed four, three patients fell prey to old age/general debility. Two Zoroastrians each succumbed to septicemia, multi organ failure, urosepsis, various kinds of malaria and lung disease/pneumonia. Isolated causes of deaths were cited as hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), kidney failure, liver disease, brain disease and gastro-intestinal bleeding. The youngest and eldest to perish were both females — at 58 and 98 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 fortnight of 2014 in Bombay, was 84 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
