Milestones
Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of January 2014.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 35 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 44 years, averaging at 29 years.
Six births versus 39 deaths were the figures for the last 15 days of the first month of the new year.
Seventeen Zoroastrians were lost due to various diseases of the heart, 14 of whom were over the age of 80. While pneumonia/lung disease took the lives of six patients, three each succumbed to kidney failure and septicemia. Brain disease, old age/general debility and Parkinson’s disease claimed two persons each. Cancer, anemia and urosepsis felled single lives. In the case of a 15-year-old girl (the youngest loss to the community) the coroner’s report was awaited. The eldest to breathe her last was a centenarian. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for January 16-31, 2014 in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
