The Parsi community will survive beyond 200 years believes two-thirds of the respondents who participated in a poll commissioned by Parsiana

In the past two issues of Parsiana we had carried the community’s views on socio-religious issues and functioning of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet as gleaned through a scientific poll commissioned by the magazine as part of its golden jubilee initiative. This final instalment presents the opinions of a cross-section of the Bombay Parsi community on issues linked with charity and its prognosis for the future.
Nearly one-third of the respondents believe that the Parsi community will survive beyond 500 years and another one-third expect it to survive between 201-500 years. Whilst only eight percent of those polled thought the community will be extinct in another 100 years, in the 18-25 age bracket, this view was held by 20%.
Nine out of 10 Parsis feel that community charity has helped the Parsis, a sentiment shared across all age groups and socioeconomic sections. Just a little over one-third of the respondents were members of Parsi organizations, the maximum membership, 40% being from those in the 41-55 age group. Amongst those who are members of community organizations, 51%, or more than half, are affiliated to colony associations, another 22% are members of The Zoroastrian Student Teacher Association (ZOSTA), 19% of World Alliance of Parsi Irani Zarthoshtis (WAPIZ), 13% of Zoroastrian Youth for the Next Generation (ZYNG), and 11% each of the Zoroastrian Trust Funds of India (ZTFI) and the World Zoroastrian Organisation (WZO).
Almost two-thirds, 64%, of the respondents said that they perform muktad prayers for the deceased members of the family, the figure being higher among the lower socioeconomic category and more amongst females than males.
Parsiana would like to thank the reputed Hansa Research Group who conducted the poll and members of the community who participated.
