Referendum required
It is indeed a laudable attempt to assess the mood of the community by initiating polls on various issues facing the community, as Parsiana is doing. The sample size being limited, there may be scope for questioning the accuracy of such polls. What the community acutely needs is some sort of broad based referendum not restricted to readers of Parsiana alone.
I therefore suggest enlisting the help of volunteers from organizations such as ZYNG (Zoroastrian Youth for the Next Generation) to conduct a door-to-door survey on the views of the community in colonies where the majority of bawas live. Other areas too should be included in the referendum.
To lend credibility to such an effort, the Bombay Parsi Punchayet’s (BPP) voter registration numbers may be recorded and signature taken of persons expressing their views.
I feel the BPP should do such constructive work by spending a few lakhs of rupees instead of wasting their funds running into crores for litigation. But will it, considering the innumerable tangles in which this supposedly apex body of the community is tied up in and the troglodyte (caveperson like) occupants of the chairs of trusteeship?
Until such a conclusive referendum is conducted, there are going to be bigots who will blabber "put your money where your mouth is,” as if all the institutions, fire temples, etc were bequeathed to the community by their own ancestors even though these same persons shamelessly rely on being subsidized by charity.
