Milestones
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 46 years, averaging at 34 years.
Thirty-nine Zoroastrians opted to be interred at the Bombay Towers of Silence while only five births were reported.
Five of the nine patients who succumbed to failure of the heart were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Lung disease/pneumonia and cancer took the lives of five Zoroastrians each whereas kidney failure claimed four. Three community members each were victims of Parkinson’s disease and old age/general debility. Isolated deaths were caused due to dehydration, Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, hypercalcemia (excessive calcium in the blood), leukocytosis (increased number of white corpuscles in the blood), leukemia (a blood disease in which the white cells are abnormal in type or number), malnutrition, asthma, multi organ failure, diabetes and candidiasis (a disease caused by a fungal infection). The community lost two centenarians — a 101-year-old male and a female, aged 103! The youngest to breathe his last was a 36-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of December in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
