The marriage officer at the OCH registered 19 interfaith unions and three community marriages. The registers at Khar recorded 11 intercommunity and one civil marriage.
Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed six Zoroastrians were cremated during the four-month period.
Besides the above data also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the last 15 days of 2013.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 43 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 42 years, averaging at 32 years.
Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of December. Intimation of only three births was received by Parsiana from the one hospital in south Bombay that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 31.
Heart disease as usual was the major killer claiming 13 lives of which nine were aged 80 and above. Three patients each fell prey to septicemia, cancer and hypertension. Pneumonia/lung disease, diabetes and kidney failure were the causes of deaths of two Zoroastrians each. Dyspnoea (difficulty in breathing), intestinal obstruction and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) took isolated victims. The youngest and eldest to perish were both males — aged 51 and 101 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for December 16-31, 2013 in Bombay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
