MILESTONES
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 29 and 40 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 35 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 58 years, averaging at 43 years.
Forty bodies were consigned to the Bombay Doongerwadi as versus only five births in the community. The non-functioning of the heart was the cause of death for 12 Zoroastrians. Eight of the 12 were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Pneumonia/lung disease took four lives, whereas Parkinson’s disease, multi organ failure and kidney failure felled three each. Two patients were victims of brain disease, cancer and dengue. One life each was lost due to liver disease, AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome), diabetes, cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissue), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), haematoma (a swelling filled with blood), septicemia, hypertension and old age/general debility. A 48-year-old male was the youngest loss to the community. The eldest to breathe her last was a 98-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the second half of September in Bombay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
