MILESTONES
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at Khar. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
The OCH registers revealed 15 interfaith marriages whereas at Khar the count was 14 intercommunity and two civil marriages. One interfaith marriage was solemnized at Thana.
At the Chandanwadi crematorium 15 Zoroastrian bodies were cremated during the four-month period.
There were no Parsi weddings registered during these 15 days.
Twenty-six Zoroastrians opted to be interred at the Bombay Towers of Silence while only five births were reported.
Failure of the heart was the main cause of death for 12 community members, 11 of whom were over 80 years. Pneumonia/lung disease took the lives of four patients, while two were victims of cancer. Diseases of the brain, liver, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, asthma, multi organ failure, hypertension and kidney failure felled one Zoroastrian each. The youngest and oldest to die were both males — at 58 and 98 years respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for August 16-31 in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
