Milestones

Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between the first 15 days of the new year have been mentioned herewith.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 40 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 43 years, averaging at 31 years.
An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (one) and death (18) figures for the first 15 days of January 2013.Diseases of the heart took the lives of nine patients — six were octogenarians and nonagenarians. While brain disease felled three, cancer claimed two. One Zoroastrian each died due to diabetes, lung disease/pneumonia, multi organ failure and kidney failure. Fifty-nine was the youngest age at death; the eldest — 90. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of January in Bom­bay, was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
