MILESTONES

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of October 2013.
No community members tied the knot during this period.
Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who send us copies of birth certificates there were five babies born. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 26. Cancer was the major killer disease this time taking the lives of six Zoroastrians. Heart disease and diabetes claimed four patients each. Kidney failure felled three, while two patients each were victims of septicemia and multi organ failure. Brain disease, hypoprotemia (deficient protein in the blood plasma), liver disease, old age/general debility and lung disease/pneumonia were isolated causes of deaths. Sixty-two was the youngest age at death, the eldest, 96. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first half of October in Bom­bay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
