Milestones data, primarily for the last 15 days of December 2012, is published here.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 35 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 35 years, averaging at 29 years.
Births cut a sorry figure for the last fortnight of 2012. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 28. Nine Zoroastrians were victims of heart disease (of these, seven were in the 80 and above age category). The other killer disease was kidney failure which took the lives of five patients. Three succumbed to cancer and two each to hypertension, old age/general debility, Alzheimer’s disease and lung disease/pneumonia. Septicemia and brain disease felled one patient each. A young lad, all of 22 years, who was an unfortunate victim of a hit-and-run accident was the youngest to die. The eldest was a 97-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for December 16-31, 2012 in Bom­bay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
