Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of November 2012.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 34 years, averaging at 30 years.
Twenty-seven Zoroastrians opted to be interred at the Bombay Towers of Silence while only six births were reported. As usual, heart disease took the lives of nine patients. Four of the nine were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Cancer felled five. Three deaths were attributed to old age/general debility. Two Zoroastrians each were victims of kidney failure, lung disease/pneumonia and brain disease. Hypoproteinemia (deficient protein in the blood plasma), urinary tract infection, hypercalcemia (excessive calcium in the blood) and urosepsis claimed one victim each. Fifty-nine and 93 were the youngest and eldest ages at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for November 16-30 in Bombay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
