Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between 15th and 31st of October 2012 have been mentioned herewith.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 34 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 36 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 31 and 44 years, averaging at 38 years.

Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of October. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 30. This time the major killer was pneumonia/lung disease claiming seven Zoroastrians. Six patients, all in the age group of over 80, succumbed to diseases of the heart. Four were victims of brain disease, while three fell prey to cancer and two each to multi organ failure, hypertension and kidney failure. Hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by deficiency of thyroid secretion), septicemia, diabetes and malaria took isolated lives. A 102-year-old male was the eldest loss to the community. The youngest to breathe his last was aged 64. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the period of October 15-31 in Bom­bay, was 83 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
