Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of September 2011.
Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of September. Intimation of only one birth was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 36. Of the five Zoroastrians who succumbed to heart disease, three were over the age of 80. Pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of four lives whereas kidney failure, urosepsis and cancer claimed three lives each. Two victims each fell prey to brain disease and obesity. Myelopathy (disease of the spinal cord), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), diabetes, old age/general debility, Parkinson’s disease, multi organ failure, Alzheimer’s disease, oliguria (deficient urine secretion), head injury, septicemia and epilepsy were the causes of isolated deaths. An accident was the cause of traumatic quadriplegia (paralysis of all four limbs) in the case of one victim. The youngest to die were a pair of twins — one, a two-day-old, the other, at 6 days. Ninety-six was the eldest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of September, in Bombay, was 74 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
