Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the latter half of September 2011 are carried in this issue.

While 41 Zoroastrians preferred to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence, only seven births were reported to Parsiana. As usual, heart disease claimed most lives, the count being 13. Of them, eight were over the age of 80. The other killers were: pneumonia/lung disease (five patients), brain disease and cancer (four each), urinary tract infection and kidney failure (three each) and diabetes, septicemia and old age/general debility (two each). Parkinson’s disease claimed an isolated Zoroastrian. In the case of one death the coroner’s report was kept pending as the body was in a decomposed state. A victim of an accident succumed to his multiple injuries and fractures. The community also lost a four-year-old boy. Ninety-eight was the highest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of September, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
