Milestones

Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between February 16 and 28, 2011 have been mentioned herewith.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 27 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms averaged at 28 years.

Thirty deaths as versus two births was the ratio for the second half of the month. Of the nine victims that fell prey to diseases of the heart, seven were over 80 years. The other diseases that claimed lives were: lung disease/pneumonia (five), brain disease (four), cancer (three) and liver disease and sepsis (two each). Old age/general debility, septicemia, asthama and ulcer claimed isolated patients. In the case of one death the viscera was reserved for chemical analysis. A 103-year-old male was the oldest loss to the community! Forty-one was the youngest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 13 days of February, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
