Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of February 2010.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 40 years, averaging at 30 years.

Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of February. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 33. The major killer — heart disease — felled 13 patients, seven of whom were aged above 80 years. Cancer took a toll of five lives. Hypertension was the cause of death of three Zoroastrians, whereas two victims each fell prey to diabetes and pneumonia/lung disease. Isolated causes of deaths were: hypoglycemia (decrease in blood sugar), cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general ill health), Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, old age/general debility, brain disease, asphyxia (suffocation) and septic boils. Ninety-eight was the eldest age of death, the youngest, 63. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of February, in Bom­bay, was 82 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
