Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between June 16-30, 2010 have been mentioned herewith.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 28 and 41 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 34 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 34 and 53 years, averaging at 40 years.

While 29 Zoroastrians opted to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence, there were only six births reported for the 15 day period. Four of the seven patients who breathed their last due to diseases of the heart were in the 80 and above age group. While four Zoroastrians were victims of kidney failure, three each succumbed to cancer and lung disease/pneumonia. Cache-xia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general illhealth) and old age/general debility felled two persons each. One Zoroastrian each were victims of acid peptic disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, brain disease, hypertension, diabetes, septicemia, diarrhoea and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body). Forty-six was the youngest age at death, 93, the eldest. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of June 2010, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
