Milestones

Milestones data, primarily for the latter half of May 2010, is published here.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 29 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 31 years, averaging at 28 years.

Data on four births in Bom-bay for the 15-day period was received by Parsiana (from the two south Bombay hospitals) while 40 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet). Nine victims fell prey to heart diseases, seven of them being in the 80+ age category. Seven patients succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease, while five died due to hypertension. Diabetes and old age/general debility took a toll of three patients each while kidney failure killed two Zoroastrians. There were 10 isolated cases registered for the 15 day period. They were: Parkinson’s disease, subdural haematoma (the part of the brain between the dura mater swollen and filled with blood) due to a head injury, urinary tract infection, multi organ failure, dehydration, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), septicemia, tuberculosis of the spine and lungs, diarrhoea and myasthenia gravis (muscular weakness). The youngest loss to the community was that of a three-day-old baby who breathed his last due to milk aspiration (drawing in of milk into the lungs). Ninety-five was the eldest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of May 2010, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
