Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred in Bombay between April 1-15, 2010 have been listed here.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 18 and 30 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 24 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 21 and 35 years, averaging at 29 years.

Five births and 33 deaths were notified in the first 15 days of April. Heart disease took a toll of 10 lives, seven of whom were in the 80 and above age group. The other killers were lung disease/pneumonia (four) and hypertension, old age/general debility, Parkin­son’s disease, liver disease, kidney failure and septicemia (two Zoroastrians each). In the case of one patient the cause of death mentioned was "decomposed body, cause of death cannot be given.” The other isolated cases were: sepsis, cancer, osteoporosis (loss of bone density due to excessive absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the bone), arthritis, empyema (a collection of pus in a cavity, hollow organ or space) and brain disease. A youthful 22-year-old male was an unfortunate victim of a road accident. The eldest to pass away was a female, one year short of her centenary. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of April 2010, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
