Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the former half of May 2010 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 29 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 33 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 33 and 39 years, averaging at 36 years.

Seven Zoroastrian babies were born during the first 15 days of May as versus 35 Zoroastrians who breathed their last. Lung disease/pneumonia, being the major killer, claimed eight lives. Six victims fell prey to heart disease, two of them being in the 80 and above age group. The other killers were: hypertension (five), septicemia (three) and Alzheimer’s disease, brain disease, diabetes and old age/general debility (two each). Urinary tract infection, dehydration, kidney failure, cancer, gastro-intestinal bleed and liver disease felled single patients each. The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. A 45-year-old male was the youngest to breathe his last; the eldest, a 97-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for May 1-15, 2010, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom-bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

In the Milestones column of the May 21, 2010 issue of Parsiana it was erroneously printed that Freyan Edulji, son of Shezrin and Phiroze, was born in Ahme-dabad on October 12, 2009. Fre-yan was born in Bombay. The error is regretted.
