An eye on independence

"For every blind person there are eight others who are partially sighted and cannot function without the aid of special magnifying devices,” noted a press release from the Mehta International Eye Institute whose surgical director and chief Dr Keiki Mehta is the chairman of the Low Vision Aids (LVA) Centre at the NAB Kantaben and Varjivadas Saraiya Low Vision Centre.

The function to mark the silver jubilee of the LVA Centre was held at the National Association for the Blind at Worli on May 2, 2010 when Dr T. P. Lahane, dean of the Sir J. J. Hospital conducted a session on different aids available. Designed to make a handicapped person function normally there are different aids available in a varied range, from the simple ones to the more specialized electronic ones. Offering free services, the Centre provides for eye screening, clinical assessment and thereafter prescription and instruction in the use of low vision devices, orientation and mobility training, vocational guidance, referrals and follow-up services to equip a person for independent living, notes the website eyeway.org
