Customizing vision

Though correction of near and farsightedness and astigmatism using the LASIK system has been around for some time now, the new method of ‘customizing’ it literally designs the treatment like a person’s fingerprints for each individual eye, to erase all the irregularities or aberrations in the eye’s optical system. This treatment has been introduced for the first time in India by Dr Keiki Mehta at the Mehta International Eye Institute at Colaba, Bombay, which offers the most sophisticated and comprehensive eye care to patients in India and abroad, according to a note forwarded by the Institute.

Dr Keiki Mehta: new techniques

In addition to the German customized LASIK treatment, which offers corrective surgery to achieve optimum vision, innovative customized treatments are also available for cataract removal and the treatment of glaucoma. Mehta has designed and developed a new glaucoma implant device for treating difficult cases which bears his name, the Mehta Glaucoma Shunt, now sold all over the world and lauded as a significant development in long-term control of the disease, as per the note.
Mehta has garnered many honors as a pioneer in intraocular lens implants, including the Outstanding Recognition Award presented by the International Council of Cataract Surgeons for outstanding research and development in cataract surgery. He is the first and only Indian to have been invited to operate on Video Cataracta in Milan, Italy in 2004, Europe’s biggest live surgery contest broadcast to 23 countries in Europe. Besides being the first Indian surgeon on the editorial board of the widely read Ocular Surgery News, Mehta is honorary consultant ophthalmic surgeon to the governor of Maharashtra, the armed forces, Government of India and the Maharashtra Police, notes the write up.
