Milestones

Milestones data primarily of the last 15 days of 2009 are published herein.

Marriages taken place in the community between December 16-31 were published in the January 21, 2010 issue of Parsiana.

Four births and 31 deaths was the count for the last fortnight of December. Nine victims fell prey to heart disease of which five were 80 years and above. The other killers were pneumonia/ lung disease (four), cancer (three) and old age/general debility and Alzheimer’s disease (two each). Multi organ failure, hernia, liver disease, hypertension, haemorrhage and shock due to multiple internal and external injuries, Par-kinson’s disease, brain disease, kidney failure, asphyxia (suffocation), septicemia and hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of face or body) were the isolated cases for the 15-day period. The youngest and eldest to perish were both males — at 47 and 94 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of 2009, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
