Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian com­munity primarily for the latter half of January 2010.

Marriages taken place in the community between January 16-31 were published in the February 21, 2010 issue of Par­siana.

Thirty-nine Zoroastrians wished their bodies to be interred at the Bombay Doongerwadi for the last 15 days of January. Only four babies were born during that period. Heart disease claim 16 patients. Eight of those were in their 80s and 90s. General debility/old age and diabetes took a toll of four lives each, while three victims fell prey to hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) and two each to kidney failure, pneumonia/lung disease and cancer. Hypertension, septicemia, liver disease, brain disease, Par­kinson’s disease and haemorr­hage and shock due to multiple fractures were the isolated cases listed. A 105-year-old female was the eldest to breathe her last, whereas the youngest was a 36-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of January, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
