“A lesson to learn”

On reading "A lesson to learn” (Editorial Viewpoint, Parsiana, December 7, 2009) about the Zoroastrian Information Centre at Udvada it is clear that visitors to the Centre have made a number of important suggestions that can serve as guidelines for further development of the museum there.
Most of the visitors are more interested in visual exhibits, models, artifacts and pictorial posters along with curious collections pertaining to our religious and cultural heritage rather than in the written information which is provided on the walls. Since it is called an Information Centre, such detailed information is essential for it has special value even though only scholars and a few visitors who have the time can study and appreciate it.
I have a personal interest in such information to educate learners as well as experience in the creation of a museum art gallery having created a religious and cultural gallery at the Ahmedabad City Museum at Sanskar Kendra where models made of wood, plaster of Paris and fiberglass are displayed. These exhibits attract non-Parsi visitors as well. Also displayed are pictorial computerized charts of salient information and some artifacts of the cultural heritage of Parsis.
The model of a dadgah, with the light of the holy fire in the kebla, and a plaster model of a priest offering prayers, attracts many visitors. A large plaster model of the tower of silence is another focus of interest and information is provided about this hygienic and scientific structure. In addition, explanatory leaflets are provided for visitors.
With the advent of e-mail and websites, students are less interested in books and demonstrations, exhibitions, slides and video units. Films and museums are modern aids in education. Reference books are stacked in libraries for scholars only, as time is an important factor.
Since 1984 I have undertaken a Parsi cultural heritage project for youngsters, creating pictorial color charts on religious and historical aspects which I find are of immense value. I have donated a treasure of information to the Information Centre in Udvada. Paintings, sketches and photographs have an impact on visitors. Softly played Iranian music could enhance the ambiance there. I suggest that a model of the memorial pillar at Sanjan be placed in the compound near the entrance of the museum and the Zoroastrian flag also be displayed there. A guide could be appointed to furnish information to visitors.
More space and funds are required for the expansion of the museum. Perhaps generous donors will pitch in. Levying an entrance fee could also help. Funds are also required for regular maintenance. The organizers of the Foundation for the Development of Udvada deserve credit for thus glorifying the premises of our holy Iranshah. NOSHIR DABOO
