Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of November 2009.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 42 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 57 years, averaging at 30 years.

The birth of eight babies were reported in the last 15 days of November at the two south Bombay hospitals that report to Parsiana on the same. Twenty-nine Zoroastrians opted for dokhmenashini. Heart disease took a toll of 11 lives (six of whom were in the above 80 age category). Lung disease/pneumonia felled four victims and cancer, three. Urinary tract infection, malaria and liver disease claimed two patients each. Haemorrhage, leukemia, kidney failure, dyspnoea (difficulty in, or labored breathing) and intestinal obstruction were the isolated cases registered. The age range fluctuated between 43 and 97 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of November 2009, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
