Milestones

Milestones data primarily of the former half of November 2009 are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 36 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 44 years, averaging at 30 years.

The ratio of birth vs deaths for the first 15 days of November was 4:41. Ten Zoroastrians succumbed to heart disease, eight being in the 80 and above age group. Hypertension felled seven patients and four each were victims of septicemia and pneumonia/lung disease. Old age/general debility, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) and cancer took a toll of two lives each. The 11 isolated cases registered for the 15-day period were: asthma, asphyxia (suffocation), kidney failure, gangrene, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), Parkinson’s disease, malaria, brain disease, liver disease, arteriosclerosis (degenerative arterial change associated with old age) and leukemia. The eldest and youngest ages at death were 98 and 54 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the former half of November, in Bom­bay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The death list is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
