Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the last 15 days of September 2008.

Eight babies were born during September 16-30. As per the names of those deceased that is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet, 31 Zoroastrian bodies were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence. Heart disease felled seven patients, six of whom were in the above 80 age category. The other killers were pneumonia/lung disease (six), cancer (four) and diabetes, liver disease and old age/general debility (two each). Hypertension, prostatitis (inflammation of the prostrate gland), cellulitis (an inflammation of connective tissue), anemia, urinary tract infection, kidney failure and brain disease were the isolated cases registered for the latter half of September. A stillborn baby girl was also lost to the community. The age range fluctuated between 51 and 94 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last fortnight of September, in Bom­bay, was 75 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
