Milestones
Milestones
Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of May 2008.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 26 and 41 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 31 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 45 years, averaging at 31 years.
Doongerwadi deaths, information for which is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet, numbered 39 for the first 15 days of May. Births registered at the two south Bombay hospitals (from where Parsiana gets its birth data) numbered a measly three. Six victims succumbed to heart disease — the major killer — two of whom were 80 years and above. Next came old age/general debility, lung disease/pneumonia, cancer and septicemia which took a toll of five lives each. Kidney failure felled four Zoroastrians. Diabetes and hypertension claimed three lives each. There were five isolated cases registered for the 15-day span. They were: multi organ failure, brain disease, Parkinson’s disease, anemia and asthma. A 36-year-old male was lost to the community — the youngest to die. The eldest to breathe his last was a centenarian. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first half of May, in Bombay, was 71 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our rea- ders would appreciate this re-quirement and cooperate with us.
