Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place in the first 15 days of May 2005 are published in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 48 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 57 years, averaging at 32 years.

The former half of May witnessed the birth of three babies as versus 42 deaths. Eight of the 12 deaths attributed to heart disease were of people 80 years plus. Six patients succumbed to cancer and five each to pneumonia/lung disease and hypertension. Old age/general debility and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) took a toll of three lives each whereas septicemia and diabetes felled two victims each. Asthma, diseases of the brain and liver, urinary tract infection and malaria were the reported isolated cases. The youngest to perish, a 20-year-old girl, hung herself. The eldest to die was a 96-year-old lady. A youth, aged 35, was also lost ot the community. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first half of May, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
