Intercommunity as well as civil marriages among Parsis registered at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East) for the period September-December 2007 are published in this issue. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted from the listing.

The marriage officer at the OCH registered 28 interfaith unions and four community marriages. The MHADA registers recorded 19 intercommunity marriages.

Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed seven Zoroastrians were cremated during the four-month period.

Besides the above data also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the first 15 days of 2008.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 38 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 51 years, averaging at 30 years.

Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of 2008. Intimation of only one birth was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 42 for the period January 1-15. The usual major killer — heart disease — took the lives of 14 Zoroastrians, 10 of whom were in the 80 and above age group. Septicemia and lung disease/pneumonia took a toll of five lives each. Four victims fell prey to cancer and three to general debility/old age. Thirteen isolated cases were registered for the 15-day period. They were: infected bed sores, Alzheimer’s disease, multi organ failure, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of face or body), brain disease, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), Parkinson’s disease, hyponatraemia (decreased sodium in the blood), hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body, usually resulting from a cerebrovascular accident on the opposite side), hypertension, liver disease, hyperparathyroidism (underaction of the parathyroid glands with decrease in serum calcium levels) and diabetes. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of January 2008, in Bom­bay, was 74 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
