Milestones data primarily of the latter half of January 2008 are published herein.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 43 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 60 years, averaging at 34 years.
After a dismal one birth recorded for the first 15 days of January, the latter fortnight saw a resurgence of babies with 14 births registered at the two south Bombay hospitals that Parsiana gets its data from. The Doongerwadi figures stood at 29 deaths. Pneumonia/lung disease beat heart disease to be the major killer, claiming six Zoroastrians. Heart disease followed with four patients, three being over the 80+ age group. The other killers were: old age/general debility (three) and kidney failure and septicemia (two each). The 12 isolated cases registered were: gastrointestinal infection, hypertension, osteoporosis, liver disease, brain disease, diabetes, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by deficiency of thyroid secretion), blood disease, bed sores, Down’s syndrome (refers to a type of congenital mentally subnormal child with facial characteristics resembling the Mongolian races), Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. A centenarian breathed her last — the eldest age at death. The youngest was a 42-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of January, in Bombay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
