Milestones

Information on those who have married out of the community and those who have opted for cremation during April to June 2008 has been published herein. Other regular milestones data is primarily for the 15-day period of July 1-15.

Names of the intercommunity married couples are gleaned from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) and the MHADA office in Fort and Bandra (East) respectively. However, names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

The marriage registrar witnessed 10 interfaith unions at OCH and eight at MHADA. There were two civil marriages between Parsis registered at OCH.

For the three-month period there were 11 Zoroastrian bodies consigned to the flames at Bombay’s Chandanwadi crematorium.

There were only four births recorded in the 15-day July period, but no marriages solemnized. Twenty-eight Zoroastrian bodies were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence in the first half of July. Six patients succumbed to diseases of the heart. Four were in the above-80 age category. Pneumonia/lung disease claimed four victims, whereas three Zoroastrians each fell prey to multi organ failure, diabetes and cancer. Two breathed their last due to septicemia. Asthma, brain disease, hypertension, leukemia, general debility/old age, haemorrhage and shock due to head injury and urinary tract infection claimed isolated lives each. The youngest age at death was 61, the eldest, 94. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for this period, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
