Milestones

Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred primarily in the first fortnight of August 2008.

Seven babies were born during August 1-15, 2008 (as per the information received by Parsiana from the two south Bombay hospitals). Thirty-three bodies were consigned to Bombay’s Doon-ger­wadi (data supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet). Six patients were victims of diseases of the heart ­— three being over the age of 80. The other fatal diseases were: old age/general debility, brain disease and lung disease/pneumonia (four each), cancer (three) and Parkinson’s disease, hypertension and kidney failure (two each). Osteoporosis, asthma, intestinal obstruction, haemorrhagic shock, motor neuron disease, urinary infection, liver disease and haemoptysis (the coughing up of blood) were the isolated cases registered. In the case of one death, the coroner’s report was pending. A 21-year-old youth was lost to the community. Ninety-nine was the highest age at death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of August, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
