Milestones

Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred in Bombay between September 1-15, 2008 have been listed in this issue.

The first 15 days of September saw only four births (as per the data that Parsiana receives from two south Bombay hospitals) as versus 33 deaths (as per the names of the deceased supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet). Nine victims succumbed to heart disease — seven of them in the age group of 80 and above. Cancer and pneumonia/lung disease felled five Zoroastrians each. The other killers were: Parkin­son’s disease and old age/general debility — four each, and septicemia and hemi­plegia (paralysis of one side of the body) — two each. The three isolated cases were respiratory tract infection, brain disease and hypertension. The youngest to breathe his last was a 19-year-old youth, the eldest — a 95-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first half of September, in Bom­bay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
