Births, marriages and deaths that occurred between May 16-31, 2008 have been featured in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 35 years, averaging at 32 years.

Births cut a sorry figure for the last fortnight of May. Intimation of only three births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet) numbered 40. Of these, 14 Zoroastrians fell prey to heart disease (eight of them being in the 80+ age category). The other killers were lung disease/pneumonia (nine victims), cancer (four), old age/general debility (three) and brain disease, septicemia and diabetes (two patients each). Multi organ failure, shock following poly­trauma, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) and urinary infection were the isolated cases for the last 15 days of May. The age range fluctuated between 54 and 96 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the same period, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
