Milestones

Milestones data primarily for the second half of July 2008 is published herein.

Births cut a sorry figure for the last fortnight of July. Intimation of only three births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun­chayet) numbered 24. Of these, seven Zoroastrians fell prey to cancer and four to heart disease (two of them being in the above 80 age category). The other killers were septicemia (three victims) and lung disease/pneumonia (two patients). There were seven isolated cases for the last 15 days of July. They were: anemia, diabetes, urinary tract infection, kidney failure, old age/general debility, liver disease and brain disease. A young 24-year-old male perished in an accident. The eldest to breathe her last was a 94-year-old lady. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the same period, in Bom­bay, was 73 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like pub­lished, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this require-ment and cooperate with us.
