Milestones

Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred primarily in the second fortnight of March 2008.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 33 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 35 years, averaging at 29 years.

The last 15 days of March saw only four births (as per the data that Parsiana receives from two south Bombay hospitals) as versus 38 deaths. Heart disease, being the major killer, claimed eight Zoroastrians, four of whom were in their 80s and above. Old age/general debility and septicemia felled four patients each. Lung disease/pneumonia, diabetes and hypertension took a toll of three lives each. Two victims each succumbed to hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), dementia (irreversible organic deterioration of mental faculties) and brain disease. Isolated cases registered were: urosepsis, liver disease, Guillain Barre Syndrome, hemoptysis (the coughing up of blood), bedsores, gastro-intestinal bleeding, cancer and hemorrhage and shock due to multiple injuries. The eldest to breathe her last was a centenarian, the youngest — a 52-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the latter half of March, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
