Milestones

This issue’s Milestones comprises births, marriages and deaths taken place between April 16 to 30, 2005.

As against 34 Zoroastrians who were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence there were only three babies born (as per the data Parsiana receives from two south Bombay hospitals) in the latter half of April. The varied causes of deaths were heart disease (nine — of whom five were in the above 80 age group); lung disease/pneumonia (five); septicemia (three); brain disease, old age/general debility, diabetes, cancer, hypertension and kidney failure (two each). Urosepsis, gastro-intestinal bleeding, anemia, asthma and peritonitis (inflammation of the serous mem­branes that line the abdominal cavity) were the isolated cases reported. The age range fluctuated between 61 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the latter half of April, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
