This issue of Parsiana publishes interfaith unions registered at the Old Customs House and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East) for the four month period of January to April 2004. Names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted.

The marriage officer at the Old Customs House sanctified 17 intercommunity and one civil marriage whereas the MHADA office regis­tered 12 interfaith and one civil marriage.

A sifting of the Chandanwadi crematorium registers revealed the names of six Zoroastrians who were cremated in the four-month period.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 30 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 33 years, averaging at 31 years.

Sixty-six Zoroastrian bodies were interrred at the Doonger­wadi as against seven births. The killers were: heart disease (25 — 16 of whom were in the above 80 age bracket), pneumonia and lung diseases (14), septicemia (six), general debility/old age and cancer (five each) and hypertension, liver disease and brain disease (two each). Among the isolated cases were hypertrophy (increase in the size of tissues), burns, colitis (inflammation of the colon), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and diabetes. The age range fluctuated between 33 and 100 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for April, in Bombay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
