As Parsiana is now published 24 times a year instead of 12, Milestones data will be carried for half a month at a time instead of one month at a time as in the past.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 27 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 30 and 40 years, averaging at 33 years.

There was only one birth reported versus 35 deaths in the first half of April. Heart disease was the usual major killer with nine victims (five, 80+). Six Zoroastrians fell prey to pneumonia/lung disease, four to old age/general debility and three each to cancer and brain disease. Diabetes, hypertension, septicemia and kidney failure claimed two lives each. One patient each succumbed to Parkinson’s disease and apnea (a transitory cessation of breathing). Two centenarians, at 100 and 102 years respectively, breathed their last whereas the youngest age at death was 56 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first half of April, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
