Milestones

There were only three reported births between August 1-15, 2005. Pneumonia/lung related diseases beat heart disease to be the major killer claiming 11 patients. Of the eight Zoroastrians who succumbed to heart disease, four were 80 years and above. Three victims fell prey to hypertension and septicemia felled two lives. Urinary tract infection, old age/general debility, brain disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, intestinal obstruction and ulcer were the isolated cases. The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. The youngest and eldest to pass away were both females at 47 and 90 years respectively. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of August, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
